Chris Borkowski-Hicks (Dr. Chris) grew up in the dental care field. Since the age of 12, she enjoyed helping her Father Dr. John Borkowski, DDS around the office – and knew then that she would make her career in Dentistry. Upon graduating from the Indiana School of Dentistry, she joined her Father in what would become Borkowski & Borkowski. Dr. Chris was blessed have her Father’s mentorship until his retirement in 1998 after 50 years in dentistry. Soon after Dr. John’s retirement, she purchased dental practice and the Avalon Dental building. Her dental practice became Avalon Dentistry, drawing from the area which the practice resides – Avalon Hills.Dr. Chris attended Denison University in Granville, Ohio where she majored in Biology and minored in French. Upon graduation from Denison University, she went on to Indiana University School of Dentistry, graduating in 1987. Dr. Chris has been a member of the American Dental Association, the Indiana Dental Association, and the Indianapolis District Society for the past 20+ years. She is a charter Board member of the IDDS Dental Foundation, serving as treasurer. Dr. Chris is proud of the legacy her Father established and that she continues. The Avalon staff is part of her extended family. Over the years, she has seen many patients grow from young children to starting their own families and then bringing their children in for dental care here at Avalon Dentistry. Our success has hinged on providing the best dental care possible for our patients and caring for our staff as family.
As a lifelong resident of Indiana, I graduated from Valparaiso High School. After graduating with the International Baccalaureate diploma, I took my studies to Indiana University-Bloomington, graduating with degrees in Biology, Psychology, and Spanish. I earned my DDS degree from Indiana University School of Dentistry graduating in the top five in my class with highest distinction. My academic and professional standings also earned me a place in the Omicron Kappa Upsilon Honors Society. My interest in dentistry began when I went on a dental mission trip to Guatemala as a translator. It was during this trip that I realized my passion for dentistry. I continued with my volunteerism throughout dental school by working with many organizations in the Indianapolis community including public health fairs and providing regular dental care to children residing in women shelters. In addition to volunteerism, I have a passion for teaching. I assisted in teaching introductory lab courses to first year dental students. My commitment to superior patient care and overall dental experience has made me the perfect fit for joining the Avalon team. In my free time, I enjoy staying active through hiking and kayaking. I also regularly enjoy boating with my family on Lake Michigan. I’m a big sports enthusiast and enjoy watching the Colts, Pacers, and all IU sports teams. I pride myself on my baking and cake decorating skills. I love exploring Indianapolis for and look forward to discovering new restaurants, shows, and adventures in the coming years!
“Hello! I am Avalon Dentistry’s newest team member. I’m a Dental Assistant, and have been since 2012! I have also enjoyed working as an orthodontic assistant, as well as assisting in other dentist offices not far from Avalon. I graduated from Kaplan College and am fully certified. I enjoy getting to know new faces and help all our patients maintain their beautiful smiles and promote good oral health care!”
“I have worked at Avalon Dentistry for 15 years. I’m trained as a dental assistant and supervise the front office.” “I am truly grateful to be a part of the Avalon Family. I enjoy going to Colts games, concerts and being outdoors with my dog Alister.”
“Because I come from a dental family it was only logical for me to pursue a career in the dental field. I’ve been practicing dental hygiene for 22 years. Twenty of those years have been spent here at Avalon Dentistry. I have a bachelor of science in Business Marketing from Murray State University, and an Associates degree in Dental Hygiene from the University of Louisville. When not doing dental hygiene I enjoy reading, swimming, biking and traveling. I’m a huge Colts, Pacers and Cubs fan as well as Indy car racing. I also love airplanes and hope one day to get my private pilots license. I was born right here in Indianapolis but have lived in many states an overseas while my Dad served in the Army. So brush floss and see me twice a year!”
“Greetings New Patient! My name is Iris Bright. I’ve been an employee at Avalon Dentistry for 25 years, though it seems like yesterday when I started. Of course I started when I was 10 J. I’ve enjoyed working with a group of fun and knowledgeable co-workers – and if I may say – two of the best dentists that I’ve had the pleasure of working with; Dr. Chris & Dr. Beavers. Now I would like to say a little something about myself … where do I begin? I work the front office my duties are scheduling & entering daily treatment, but most importantly helping patients with complex dental insurance benefits questions and issues. I enjoy meeting new people and having fun conversing with all our patients. I most enjoy talking with the ladies that are QVC shoppers! I am the Queen of the QVC Shopping Network. So if any of you new ladies are like me & would like to know more about my little known QVC secret then we can talk! Avalon Dentistry is a well run professional & fun office to meet your family’s dental care needs. Looking forward to meeting each & every one of you!”
“I am on of the two full time dental hygienists at Avalon Dentistry. I am a 1982 graduate of Indiana University School of Dentistry. I joined the Avalon Dentistry Team in 1993, working part time and in 1997 I became fulltime. Over the last 20 years, I’ve watched our practice grow and change with the times, but we’ve never lost sight of our #1 goal of giving our patients a happy, healthy smile! It’s been so rewarding to be a part of this great dental team!”

“I am a Dental Assistant, and have been with Avalon Dentistry for over a quarter of a century (sounds like a long time … but, it has flown by). I began my career in 1988 as a fresh high school graduate from Lawrence North High School. I was trained as a dental assistant by Dr. John Borkowski DDS and Dr. Chris Borkowski-Hicks DDS right here at Avalon Dentistry.” “I believe the atmosphere in our office creates a special relationship between our staff and our patients. Everyone here is genuine friendly, caring, and willing to help with any questions, concerns, or fears our patients may have. I have been blessed with the experiences of having assisted multiple doctors, and the fortune of having met, known, and connected with our many patients along the way!” “I was born and raised here in Indiana and live with my husband of 26 years in Lawrence. We have two boys, now respectful young men, whom are beginning their own journeys through life, something which brings about a bitter-sweet sting of both pride and sorrow for me. In my free time I enjoy spending time with my husband, our two fully grown “kids”, two dogs and four parakeets. I also like playing around on my iPad, and sharing dental humor (among other things) on social media.”
I bring 28 years of experience to Avalon Dentistry with 27 of those years in my current position. I earned my degree in Dental Hygiene from Indiana University – South Bend and more recently earned a Bachelors of Science degree in Public Health at Indiana University School of Dentistry. I’m committed to total patient care while continuously honing my skills developed through clinical practice and patient care. I also like to use my dental hygiene education as a catalyst for other roles and activities. My husband JD and I have two children, Nicholas and Amelia and enjoy spending time with them at their activities and sporting events.
I was born in Alabama and raised here in Indianapolis. I am married to my soulmate, Anthony and we have one beautiful daughter Christina, who is in college. I attended and graduated from PCI (Professional Career Institute), in 1976 as a Dental Assistant and later attended IUPUI Dental School to further my dental education. I enjoy cooking, traveling and singing. I’ve had the pleasure of working here at Avalon Dentistry since relocating here about two years ago. My dental motto is “I love what I do and do what I love: serving others”.
“I first met Dr. Chris when she was 14 years old. Little did I know that someday I would be working for her! I started as a dental assistant for a periodontist and have worked in perio and general dentistry my entire life. Needless to say, I enjoy my chosen field. Many of you may not be aware that I am the one who calls the patients over and over to schedule 6 months dental cleanings. Some even call me relentless! All jokes aside, I feel that I have one of the most important jobs at Avalon by helping make sure the patients maintain their healthy smiles. So when the phone rings …”
“I grew up the daughter of a dentist in Fort Wayne, Indiana. I worked in my fathers practice, in my teens, and found my passion for dentistry early on. Dr. Chris’ dad, Dr. John Borkowski, taught my father in the Crown and Bridge Department at IU School of Dentistry in the later 50’s. My father always told me how Dr. John was the best Dentist that he knew. Therefore, when I was fifteen and was facing much dental treatment due to 11 teeth congenitally missing, my father drove me long distance to have Dr. John perform Crown and Bridge on me. My parents, religiously, traveled from Fort Wayne to Avalon Dentistry for ever dental appointment.”
“I received my Dental Hygiene degree from IU School of Dentistry in 1983. Shortly after that, I started working for Dr. John and Dr. Chris. I have hygiene in Indiana and Illinois throughout my career. After returning from Illinois, I found my way back to Avalon and was thrilled to be working with many of the same wonderful ladies I worked with in my early 20’s. This practice feels like home!!”
“My interests, outside of teeth, are my family, my lovely Bernese Mountain Dogs, cooking, swimming and traveling.”
I grew up in McCordsville where I attended Mt. Vernon Schools kindergarten through high school. Following high school, I attended Anderson University my freshman year, then transferred to International Business College where I earned my Associate of Applied Science Degree in Dental Assisting. Some of my hobbies include bowling, singing (not around people though), drawing, playing with my furbabies (my cats… Ellie and Meeko), and spending time with family and friends.
